The Solution

Understanding the ins and outs of universal link functionality

For decades, internet links have been connecting people to content—taking them from one website or app to another and creating a complex network of channels across the web. As the Internet of Things expands, ensuring seamless connections between users and personalized content is paramount. The tools to do so are becoming cleaner and streamlined, delivering more engagement and a better user experience. In this post, we will specifically address iOS universal links from Apple—what they are, how they work, and key considerations to keep in mind when using them.

Traditional iOS Deep Linking

Deep linking on iOS apps existed long before the introduction of Universal Links. Uniform resource identifier (URI) schemes were implemented by app developers to provide easy paths in linking users directly to in-app destinations and specific content which improved personalization and removed friction on the path to conversion. 

As an example, the URI scheme fb:// opens the Facebook app, fb://profile/123456789 is a deep link that goes beyond opening the app, it also routes the user to a specific Facebook profile.

Traditional deep links still work today on iOS if the user has the app already installed. However, if the user doesn’t have the app installed, the experience is less than desirable and the user is met with a confusing prompt (“Cannot Open Page”) in Safari, as demonstrated by the flow diagram below.

Now let’s get to universal links. 

What is a universal link?

Unlike a normal deep link that is redirected to a location via a user’s default web browser, a universal link is routed directly by the operating system (OS) making a secure association between an app and a webpage. Apple introduced universal links with iOS 9 to improve the ability of brands to offer a seamless mobile deep linking experience regardless of whether a user has their app installed or not. According to Apple, the goal in creating universal links was to create a more reliable and secure connection between web and app content. 

Apple identifies the benefits of universal links as:

  • Uniqueness
  • Security
  • Flexibility
  • Simplicity
  • Privacy 

While universal links have favorable qualities for iOS specific devices, there are certain limitations and drawbacks to their use that we’ll touch on later. 

How does a universal link work?

Universal links operate similarly to deep links with the following exceptions:

  1. Unlike deep links, universal links do not use a URI scheme.
  2. Universal links do not utilize redirects through a web browser. They’re executed directly by the device operating system.
  3. Universal links are a series of web pages that are linked to in-app locations.

Essentially, a universal link is one link that can take the user either into an app or to an associated webpage. Which route the user takes depends on whether the user has the app installed or not and any stored preferences based on the user’s prior interactions with the app’s universal links. The goal is to respect where the user prefers to view content. If a user starts browsing your website through a web browser and clicks on a universal link within that same domain, they will stay within the web browser instead of getting redirected into the app. If, however, the universal link is clicked on in a different domain, it will open in the app if the user has it installed.

Universal links can also be used to communicate between apps by sending small amounts of data without using a third-party server. One app can ask another app to open specific content by creating URLs based on the target app’s domain, path, and parameters. See relevant Apple developer documentation

When an iOS app is downloaded, the App Site Association file is also downloaded. This file contains a map of locations to send the user to when they click on a universal link. Developers and marketers work together to determine what these locations are and code them into the app. This is an important step to ensure that web pages have corresponding app experiences so when a user clicks on a link (either in-app or web) they are met with continuity in the experience. If this is not implemented correctly, links can break, and/or the user can be met with a disjointed experience.

Universal link limitations for consideration

With “universal” in the name, it might be assumed that universal links have unlimited capabilities; however, this is not necessarily the case. When implementing universal links, keep the following in mind to ensure that the functionality is working in the best interest of both the advertiser, the developer and the user.

Universal links can be easily broken and/or disabled

If a universal link is broken/disabled, the operating system will redirect the user to the website URL until the app is reset or upgraded. Broken universal links can be difficult for developers to debug; Apple does not have a tool to help validate and test them.

It’s also important to note that a universal link will not function properly when pasted into a browser URL address bar.

Universal links cannot be wrapped

Certain social networking platforms, as well as email marketing platforms, utilize link wrapping. For example, most companies use outside providers such as MailChimp and SendGrid to automate, streamline, and organize their email campaigns. Most of these providers track views, clicks, and open rates on their platforms by wrapping the URL with their own redirect. This ensures that the email provider is getting the data before the user is sent to the directed content. 

This precludes the use of a universal link since if it’s wrapped, versus clicked on directly,  it will redirect users to the web fallback instead of the app. Ask us how SmartLinksTM can help with this use case. 

Navigation arrow that can break universal links 

Shortly after the release of universal links, Apple added a navigation arrow at the top corner of the screen. If this arrow is clicked, the user will be navigated to the attached website. If the user wants to move from app to web or web to app with this navigation arrow, the universal link will become disabled and will no longer function as it should. This can be an issue if the fallback website redirects the user to the App Store creating a confusing and problematic user experience.

Once the user clicks on the arrow, the operating system will remember the website as the default route for that universal link. Moving forward, any click on that specific link will send the user to the fallback website instead of the app. Users unfamiliar with universal link functionality may mistakenly think your app is broken and may not know how to reset their preferences. 

Clicks difficult to measure

As mentioned above, universal links do not use redirects to connect content, they are routed by the operating system. While this makes the link more secure, it complicates the ability to measure clicks and perform attribution. A click is measured when the redirect happens but without it, it is nearly impossible to determine if the click occurred. This is a major issue for advertisers when it comes to attribution.

Enhancements to SmartLinksTM management and reporting.

SmartLinks by Kochava

SmartLinks deep linking technology enables marketers to create one link for measurement across platforms. With it, users are seamlessly rerouted to the correct app store or content destination. In the ever-expanding effort to grow with our customers, we’re excited to announce new updates for better deep linking through SmartLinks management and reporting visibility. 

Copy existing SmartLinks

If a pre-existing SmartLink only needs a couple of changes, or if another campaign needs the same SmartLink settings, simply copy the existing SmartLink, without having to create a whole new one from scratch.

Within the Links dashboard, head to the SmartLinks tab. You will see a list of the SmartLinks that have already been created. To create a copy of one, simply click on the three dots to the right of the name and select “Create Copy.” From there, you can alter the new SmartLinks’ name and settings.

Along with duplicating SmartLinks, advertisers can now edit them directly within Campaign Manager without having to access the Links dashboard separately. 

Report filtering by SmartLink name and more

Efficiently hone in on performance data associated with your SmartLinks by filtering reports based on the name of your individual SmartLinks (using the “Segment” filter field), as well as the campaigns you assign them to. This feature is available for the following reports: network summary, campaign summary, click, install, matched impression, and reengagement. In addition, you can filter by campaign, tracker, and segment in event reports.

When pulling a report, click on the “Customize” button. Scroll down to the “Filters” section to find the “Segments” field. Within this area, select one or more SmartLinks by name that you want to include in your report. You can also exclude chosen entries by choosing “Exclude” in the dropdown to the right (the default is “Include”).

Want to quickly find that SmartLink you just created or updated? Now you can sort your SmartLinks fast by “Updated (Newest)” and “Updated (Oldest)” or “Created (Newest)” and “Created (Oldest)” on the SmartLinks list page.

Deep linking can increase conversion rates by 40%, and decrease drop-off rates by a significant margin through reducing friction within a user’s journey from ad to install. But what if we reduced user friction one step further? One install-app delivery software experimented with this idea—and it’s paying off. 

Let’s start with the basics. 

Media implemented with a basic deep link drives a user to a specified destination within an app. Seamless, simple navigation allowing the user a clear pathway to a lower-funnel interaction, boosting install and conversion rates across the board. Alternatively, if the app is absent from the device, then that user is immediately deferred to the appropriate app store. From there, the consumer can install and launch the app where deferred deep linking will route them to the designated location within the app previously configured through the SmartLink. It’s a couple of extra steps but still achieves a completely seamless user interaction. 

What if we cranked it up a notch?

What’s New with SmartLinks 

SmartLinkTM associations: Associate SmartLinks to media partners, agency partners, and  campaigns. 

Impression tracking: Perform impression tracking for acquisition campaigns.

Reengagement click-to-conversion tracking: SmartLinks can act as acquisition and/or reenagement trackers all in one. Simply choose the conversion events you’d like to convert on, which can include installs and any post-install events you track. 

Universal Links and App Links

  • Kochava can attribute and track clicks from Universal Links (for iOS platform) and App Links (for Android) without having to send your users to a landing page first. You can deliver the best possible routing and deep linking experience for your users without sacrificing attribution and tracking.

Steps to take prior to launch

Update recurring exports/feeds as needed

For SmartLink data ingested after the release, the segment name will reflect the SmartLink name, the campaign name will reflect the old app group name for migrated SmartLinks, and the campaign name will reflect the chosen campaign name for newly created SmartLinks. We have added “segment_name” to all  “_primary” tables in Kochava Query and have added “Segment” as a “split by” option in summary reports. Recurring exports/feeds containing SmartLink data should be updated to account for the new mapping.

Update app platform selection

The “Platform Selection” field on the Create/Edit App screen will no longer be editable when the new SmartLinks feature is released. This is being done to support enhancements made to app groups. Newly created app groups may not reuse apps from another app group and may not contain multiple apps of the same platform. As an example, you will not be able to create an app group with two apps that both have “Web” selected as the platform. To ensure you will be able to group your apps accurately, we recommend updating the platform selected for each of your apps to accurately reflect the traffic being sent to it. 

Steps to take prior or after launch

Update the Kochava SDK

To use Kochava-hosted Universal Links and/or App Links for deep linking and attribution, implement the latest SDKs for iOS (version 3.12) and Android (version 3.7.0). Integrating Universal Links and App Links can help improve the user experience and increase conversions. 

Add Universal Links and App Link Support

To take advantage of seamless deep linking for your users, complete the steps in this support doc and contact your Client Success Manager to kick off the integration process. If you have existing Kochava-hosted Universal Links or App Links, those will continue to be supported for use on Landing Pages. However, due to their platform-specific nature, they are not compatible with SmartLinks. Your Client Success Manager can help identify what steps are needed to achieve compatibility with SmartLinks.

Check for media partner integrations 

Not all current media partners are integrated for SmartLinks. Kochava has a running list of partners in the integration process and is continually adding more. If you’re looking to use SmartLinks with a media partner, please notify your Client Success Manager.

Steps to take after launch

Create your first new App Group

What happened to the old app groups? They still exist as the campaign name of migrated SmartLinks. You must create new app groups to create new SmartLinks. To create new app groups, follow the steps in this support doc.

App groups collect each platform version of a brand in one group, enabling you to create cross-platform SmartLinks to track paid and owned media campaigns. An app cannot be added to more than one app group and an app group may only contain one instance of each platform. After the launch, if you have not yet created a new app group, you will see a welcome message on the new app groups page, under the Apps & Assets menu, explaining what to do.

What happened to the old SmartLinks? They will continue to route/deep link users as they did before. They will surface on the new SmartLinks page in the UI. They cannot be edited, only archived. To create new SmartLinks, follow the steps in this support doc

If the apps included have Universal Link or App Link support, you can choose to use or not use it each time you create a SmartLink (default will be to use it). If you choose to not use Universal Link/App Link support for a given SmartLink, the start of the URL will look like “smart.link”, not “your-brand-name.smart.link.”

Working with Agencies

If you are working with an agency and would like them to create SmartLinks on your behalf, you will want to ensure that you have added them as a partner under Apps & Assets > Partner Configuration for each app included in the app group. 

If you are working with an agency, but prefer that they not create SmartLinks on your behalf, simply designate them as the agency partner each time you create a SmartLink. This will allow the agency to view the SmartLink and its performance.

You must enable postbacks specifically for the new platform-agnostic integrations, as these are separate and distinct from the platform-specific (Network Name – iOS, Network Name – Android, etc.) versions.

When using SmartLinks with a media partner and agency, there must be postbacks enabled for the agency’s traffic for each conversion event. If the agency is creating SmartLinks themselves, they can add the postbacks via their agency account. If you are creating SmartLinks for the agency, you can create postbacks for them as well under Apps & Assets > Partner Configuration and check the “Create for Agency” box.

Private Networks

If you want to associate a SmartLink to a Private Network, you need to ensure the Private Network is associated with every App in the App Group.

Even users who don’t have your app installed can be deep linked at first launch.

Kochava deep linking

A user just clicked one of your Snapchat ads for that special offer on a new set of noise-cancelling headphones. As the marketer, you placed a deep link into the Snapchat dashboard so the user will be taken right into your eCommerce app with the headphones pre-populated in the cart and the discount already applied. Now that’s a friction-free experience that will make the user much more likely to convert and complete checkout. 

However, that will only happen if the user has your app installed. What if they don’t? They’ll need to go to the app store and install the app first. When they later launch the app for the first time, how will your app know which ad campaign they converted through and what first-launch experience to give them? This is where Kochava can help. 

As your measurement tool, Kochava can track every install from your app and then process attribution by communicating with Snapchat’s API (application programming interface) to grab the context of the advertisement that the user clicked in the Snapchat platform. Snapchat tells Kochava the exact deep link you placed in their dashboard for the campaign. The Kochava software development kit (SDK) can then communicate that dynamic deep link to your app upon launch and the user can be met with the same experience as if they had the app installed when they clicked the ad. This is called dynamic deferred deep linking. 

The Snapchat and Kochava integration currently supports this functionality and Kochava will be adding the same support for Google Ads in early 2020.

Now for Facebook and other partners who do not offer an option to report the exact deep link from their dashboard, Kochava now lets marketers add a static deep link into the tracker in the Kochava campaign management dashboard. These trackers can dynamically sync to a corresponding campaign or ad group in your partner’s platform. When Kochava attributes the install back to that tracker, the Kochava SDK can send a campaign or ad group level deep link context to your app, enabling the user to be met with a personalized experience upon first launch. 

As ad platforms that see the majority share of ad spend, support for deep linking and deferred deep linking functionality is paramount to maximizing return on ad spend.
